Mystery, magic, and mixed media make a good painting. However, I am fundamentally a formalist. In my work, I seek to create serene environments and spaces in which conflict and noise are removed or reduced to compositional elements, and in which tactile and visual texture dominate.
In my current work, there are three approaches:
(1) ENCAUSTIC PAINTING:
The paintings are essentially abstract―completely abstract or sometimes abstractions of landscapes. Most often, they integrate mixed media includingchine collé, canvas, photo transfer, photomontage, and found objects.
(2) PRINTMAKING:
Most of my prints are photo etchings, but I also make linocuts, monotypes, and etchings. The prints are usually pictorial. Some integrate mixed media.
(3) PHOTOGRAPHY:
For over 30 years, I have explored photography as a means of seeing and of playing with surface and perspective in two dimensions. The subjects of my prints and selected elements of my other work are frequently derived from my photography. For example, a photograph becomes a photo etching when the process transforms the scene into a greater reality, when it adds magic.
